To make my point clearer: taking Trump to task on the trivial stuff is a way to avoid talking about - and having to take a stand on - the hard stuff. You have to report deeply on what's happening to immigrants, to protesters, to foreign nations, to democracy. Sorry if that's uncomfortable.

@timrichards sometimes there is no vote at all. It’s just discussed and agreed by consensus.

@marick There lots of good ideas in that list. But the tacit assumption is that "the government" actually wants to support unbiased scientific discovery. That has probably never been true anywhere around the world.
@khinsen @StOnSoftware @PaniczGodek @liberty Well, scientific and artistic progress has long depended on the creatives being either independently wealthy (Darwin) or working within the constraints of fickle and clueless patrons (Kepler).
But there are times when creatives are on a looser leash. (Such as Vannevar Bush’s post-WWII advocacy of basic science, which did a lot of good.)

@akamran @charette Our personal experiences don’t tell the whole story, even if we want to. Statistically it’s very safe to get vaccines; personally I was injured and had side effects. I’m absolutely pro-vaccine, and gave my own kid the same vaccine. He’s immune and doing fine. I know I had a bad luck. That doesn’t mean that I believe other people shouldn’t get vaccinated.
The “all men” phrase is just a colloquial term to describe that statistic. Now if you have problem with that, maybe you shouldn’t be part of this discussion?
...but I apparently need to hop on social media after writing the letters and swear a lot in order to offset all the many times in the letters that I had to repress swears that I wanted to write.

I see the media are starting with their speculation about who will be the next leader of the Greens federally. They’re debating who seems most confident of the top three or four best-known names among the Greens Senators.
If this were a one member, one vote competition, they might have the next leader among their speculative picks. But as shown in the ACT Greens, the only party to have run a OMOV leadership ballot, journalists don’t have much insight into who the members will vote for.
In a vote amongst the party room members only, speculating about the winner is highly inaccurate because Greens party room members are not the kind to fuel that kind of media speculation. They’ll make their choice based on who they trust to govern their party room, provide support and mentorship to their colleagues, steer campaign and policy direction, and build public support. It’s not just a name recognition contest.
Every one of their Senators brings something of huge value to the party room. I know who I’d trust in that job, but my opinion is irrelevant to the outcome. I wish them well in making a tough choice, and I hope the person I’d like to see in leadership gets either a leader or deputy leader role.
